Thumb trip - day 1

Yesterday, the girls and I embarked on a tour of the thumb. We started by driving straight east and hopping on the car ferry to Harsens Island:

This island is at the top of Lake Saint Clair, and is only reachable by car ferry. It's mostly residential, and we were surprised there's only one restaurant on it! We had a delicious lunch there:

We were also surprised that there were no parks. We stopped on the side of the road to play in the water a bit:

I wanted to get this sign as a first bday gift!

Watching a car ferry while we're ON the car ferry going back:

Visiting our first state park of the trip:

It just consisted of campsites and a roadside park right on the St. Clair River:

That's Canada on the other side of the river:

Meg loved Harsens Island so much she wanted her very own island:

Playing at the beach in Marine City:

Then a freighter came by:

It was so huge!

Meg's sand castle:

Another smaller freighter:

Bigger waves came from the second freighter:

A tugboat pushing a barge:

We got to cross the drawbridge in St. Clair:

After the brief rain, we got ice cream and walked the boardwalk there:

We found a great playground in Marysville:

We made it to Port Huron to our hotel, and promptly went swimming:

It was a great first day!! Today will be all Port Huron touristy stuff.

  1. Was the island like mackinaw island or more "normal" people?

    Ps I think it's a push boat not a tug boat :-)

  2. Harsens Island was definitely more normal people. Not touristy at ALL! Only one restaurant and one party store! 99% modest residential right on the water. Only a few really big houses.
